TRANSPORTATION: Green- D Line (Riverside)

Lunch served at 12:30 pm followed by Candide- 116 minutes. Leonard Bernstein's
"comic" opera comes to dazzling new life starring Patti LuPone, Kristin Chenoweth, Met Opera's Paul
Groves and Sir Thomas Allen, accompanied by the New York Philharmonic orchestra. This tune-filled work is as relevant
today as in 1756 Europe when Voltaire wrote the novel on which it is based. Bernstein set it to music in 1956 at a time
when America was experiencing a prevailing climate of ideological intolerance in a wave of anti-communist sentiment. "Candide"satirizes
self-satisfied celebrations of the status quo, inquisitorial attacks on the individual, phony moralist, brave new-world optimism,
and essential superiority. These were charges made by Voltaire against his own society. Bernstein's approach is
deft and light, but never loses sight of the basic issues amid its musical brilliance.
