LEONARD BERNSTEIN'S

by January 18, 2012

TRANSPORTATION:  Green- D Line (Riverside) to Newton Centre Station, 18 minute walk to Ward St

or car, street parking

WHAT WILL HAPPEN:  Lunch served at 12:30 pm  followed by Candide- 116 minutes.  Leonard Bernstein's "comic" opera comes to dazzling new life
starring Patti LuPone, Kristin Chenoweth, Met Opera's Paul Groves and Sir Thomas Allen, accompanied by the New York Philharmonic orchestra.  This tune-filled work is as relevant today as in 1756 Europe when Voltaire wrote the novel on which it is based. Bernstein set it to music in 1956 at a time when America was experiencing a prevailing climate of ideological intolerance in a wave of anti-communist sentiment. "Candide"satirizes self-satisfied celebrations of the status quo, inquisitorial attacks on the individual, phony moralist, brave new-world optimism, and essential superiority. These were charges made by Voltaire against his own society.  Bernstein's approach is deft and light, but never loses sight of the basic issues amid its musical brilliance.

COST: $2.00 for your host at the door. (For paper products, beverages, and condiments.)

WHAT WILL HAPPEN: When you call in, you will agree on a dish to bring and pass.  The event is a POTLUCK DINNER. You are also asked to bring a humorous/slightly risqué valentine to be placed, when you enter, in the "Malebox" (it was so beautiful at the last party, someone wanted to take it home).  That's a definite NO-NO. The Valentine Police will be watching you. Valentines will be distributed after dinner. (If you don't bring one, you won't get one.)

The second requirement is for you to wear some (outerwear or underwear) article of RED clothing. The Valentine Police will be inspecting you as you enter. More creative members come in full costume portraying their favorite character from stage, screen or television. The object of the evening will be to "Wear Your Heart On Your Sleeve" and have as much fun as possible. Start planning your "evening out" early. You wouldn't want to miss this good time. The person who has the most fun will be awarded the annual "PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS" award. Y'all come ya heah?

As of this writing we have 15 tickets remaining to the Hasty Puddings Theatricals 164th annual production, entitled There Will Be Flood.  We will be attending the 8:00 PM performance on Thursday, 16 February 2012 at the New College Theatre, 12 Holyoke Street, Cambridge, just outside of Harvard Square (closest T stop is Harvard Square on the Red Line).  Tickets are $21.00 each and we will once again be getting seats front and center, in rows 3-5 (another group got their request in before us).

About this Production:  Please refer to the article on the front page of the January Prologue.

This event typically sells out quickly, so get your reservations in early.  Seating is assigned on a first come first served basis.  Please complete the attached Tear Sheet and send in your reservation by the postmark date of Tuesday, 7 February 2012.  This will be a most memorable evening that will have you laughing to the point of tears.  And don't be surprised if one of the undergrads just happens to end-up in your lap at some point during the evening.  See you there!
